Nestled on the banks of the River Tamar in Cornwall, Pentillie Castle is a historic country estate with a story stretching back over 300 years. Built in 1698 by Sir James Tillie, a wealthy landowner and eccentric character, the original mansion was designed as a grand family home. Sir James is perhaps best remembered for instructing that his body be placed in a mausoleum on the estate, seated in his favorite chair—adding a touch of mystery to the castle’s legacy.
The estate has remained largely in private hands since its construction, passing through generations of the Coryton family, who undertook significant restorations in the 21st century. After falling into decline in the late 20th century, Pentillie was lovingly refurbished and reopened in 2009 as a luxury B&B and exclusive events venue.
Today, Pentillie Castle is a stunning example of Cornish heritage, offering visitors a unique blend of history, charm, and modern comfort—all set within 1,500 acres of rolling woodland and parkland.
With exclusivity and privacy the very essence of the Pentillie offer, we are delighted to welcome you for exquisite weddings, special celebrations, corporate retreats and memorable holidays.
The secluded and private nature of the estate, the walled swimming pool garden, and the direct access to the River Tamar combine to make Pentillie the destination of choice.
The picturesque cottages on Pentillie Quay will be familiar to many from the TV series Beyond Paradise, where it plays the role of the home of Detective Inspector Humphrey and Martha.
